Admission Requirements

Prospective students apply to the Special Education program the spring of their sophomore year. Students must pass all sections of the Praxis Core exam by meeting or exceeding the Arkansas Department of Education cut-off scores. This test should be taken after the student has completed 30 credit hours and upon completion of ENGL 1013, ENGL 1023 and MATH 1203.

Enrollment for the fall semester in the junior year is not permitted unless all three parts of Praxis I are passed. All Curriculum and Instruction Department courses must have a grade of B or higher. Students must complete and successfully pass the background check before beginning field experiences in the schools in the fall semester of the sophomore year and each semester thereafter.

Please note that Arkansas requires all teacher license applicants to complete successfully a criminal background check. Students must earn a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher by the end of the spring semester junior year. Students who have met these requirements will be interviewed by program faculty and asked to complete a writing sample.
