Combined B.S.E. Childhood Education and M.A.T. in Elementary Education
The University of Arkansas offers a five-year program leading to licensure in elementary
education (pre-kindergarten through sixth grade), the Bachelor of Science (B.S.E.)
degree in Childhood Education and Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) degree in Elementary
Education. (The other is a four-year program for a Bachelor of Science in Education in Elementary Education.)
Students who obtain their B.S.E. in Childhood Education from the university will have completed the prerequisite course requirements for entry into the M.A.T. program. The M.A.T. degree program is a 33-semester-hour program.
Because elementary school teachers are typically responsible for the entire curriculum, the program at the University of Arkansas prepares teachers to teach language arts, reading, writing, math, science, and social studies using the Arkansas State Frameworks and Common Core State Standards.
B.S.E.
Students majoring in the Childhood Education B.S.E. must choose among four concentrations:
English as a Second Language B.S.E. Concentration
Gifted and Talented B.S.E. Concentration
Reading B.S.E. Concentration
Science, Technology, Engineering and Math B.S.E. Concentration
M.A.T.
Students majoring in the Elementary Education M.A.T. must choose from among four concentrations:
E.S.L. for K-6 Concentration
Gifted and Talented for K-6 Concentration
Reading for K-6 Concentration
STEM for K-6 Concentration
The program also offers a Master of Education in Elementary Education.
