Bachelor of Science in Education (B.S.E.) Childhood/Middle Level Education

teacher with young students writing The Department of Curriculum and Instruction offers the B.S.E. degree in Childhood Education (pre-kindergarten through grade 4) and Middle Level Education (grades 5-8).   To be recommended for an initial teaching license in childhood education or middle level education, the student must complete the appropriate B.S.E. and M.A.T. degree programs.

The Bachelor of Science in Education (B.S.E.) in middle-level education is a teacher preparation degree that prepares educators for meeting the needs of early adolescents. This undergraduate program must be completed by the end of spring 2010. Following spring 2010, the undergraduate middle-level education programs will be discontinued. Grounded in an understanding of and appreciation for the physical, intellectual, emotional, and social development of early adolescents (ages 9 to 14, and/or grades 4 to 8), the B.S.E. degree provides the pre-requisite knowledge, skills, and dispositions necessary for entry into the fifth-year, Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) program for initial licensure in middle-level education. Candidates for the B.S.E. in middle-level education will be eligible to apply for entry to the M.A.T. program, through which they will develop further expertise on educating early adolescents and graduate with the requisite skills and degree for teaching grades 4 to 8.
