Admission Requirements

Students will be selected up to the maximum number of 12 for each licensure area (English, Foreign Language, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies). The total to be admitted to the cohort is 60, contingent upon placement with partnership schools. Meeting or exceeding minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance into the MAT. Admission requirements for the secondary MAT degree program for initial licensure are as follows:

    1. Completion of an appropriate undergraduate degree program (see pre-MAT transcript evaluation for additional requirements for area of licensure--http://coehp.uark.edu/4891.htm).
    2. GPA of 3.0 in last 60 hours of completed undergraduate degree.
    3. Admission to the Graduate School. Application in January
    4. Completion of the Student Teaching/Internship Evaluation (http://coehp.uark.edu/4954.htm) by October 1.
    5. Pass Praxis I exam before admission to the program.
    6. Send three letters of recommendation to Janet Johnson-Mertz, 114 Peabody Hall, University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, AR, 72701.
    7. Completion of an interview with portfolio, which takes place in February.
    8. Admission to the Secondary Education Program. The number admitted into specific teaching fields will be determined by both availability of internship spaces in the public schools that are participating in the partnership cohort agreements and job market potential. Since admission is competitive, candidates will be judged based on grade point average, letters of recommendation, interview scores, and portfolio scores. Candidates may be recalled for a second interview.
    9. Completion of the pre-education core with a minimum of “C” in all courses (CIED 4131, CIED 4023).
    10. Completion of all prerequisite courses and requirements in content areas approved by the advisor for your area. http://coehp.uark.edu/5427.htm
    11. Payment of internship fee.
