Degrees Conferred: M.Ed. (SPED)

The M.Ed. in Special Education is designed for those students seeking a degree in special education in either teaching persons with disabilities or teaching persons identified as gifted and talented. 

Admission to the M.Ed. program in Special Education is based on the general requirements of the Graduate School.

Requirements for the Master of Education Degree: (Minimum 36 hours.) All programs will require nine semester hours of core courses, three semester hours of cognate study, and 24 semester hours in special education courses.

This course work is selected by students and faculty according to the needs of the student and certification requirements.

All programs require the completion of a minimum of 36 semester hours of work for the degree. Core course requirements can be satisfied by taking three hours from each of the areas listed below:

  1. EDFD 5013 Research Methods in Education or EDFD 5393 Statistics in Education and Health Professions
  2. EDFD 5373 Psych. Foundations of Teaching and Learning, or EDFD 5473 Adolescent Psychology in Education, or EDFD 5573 Life-Span Human Development
  3. EDFD 5303 Historical Foundations of Modern Education, or EDFD 5323 Global Education, or EDFD 5353 Philosophy of Education, or EDFD 5683 Issues in Educational Policy

Those persons pursuing an emphasis in the education of persons with disabilities will complete 27 hours of the following course requirements.
*          CIED 532V Practicum
*          CIED 5343 Applied Classroom Management
*          CIED 5573 Teaching Reading
*          CIED 5723 Teaching Persons with Mild Disabilities
*          CIED 5733 Inclusive Practices for Teaching Diverse Populations
*          CIED 5743 Teaching Persons with Physical & Health Disabilities
*          CIED 5753 Teaching Persons with Severe Emotional Disorders
*          CIED 576V Teaching Persons with Severe Disabilities
*          CIED 5873 Assessment of Persons with Disabilities
*          CIED 5883 Research in SPED
Candidates seeking only Arkansas licensure must successfully complete the courses marked with an (*).
SPED-related coursework

Those persons pursuing an emphasis in the education of persons identified as gifted and talented will complete the following course requirements.
*          CIED 5803 Nature and Needs of the Gifted and Talented
*          CIED 5813 Curriculum Development of the Gifted and Talented
*          CIED 5823 Structured Practicum for the Gifted and Talented
*          CIED 5993 Social and Emotional Components of the Gifted and Talented
*          CIED 6413 Differentiated Instruction for Academically Diverse Learners
*          CIED 6073 Seminar in Developing Creativity
*          CIED 5833 Flex Practicum in Gifted and Talented
