The Special Education Program prepares teachers for teaching students in grades 4-12 with a variety of disabilities, such as learning disabilities, mental retardation, attention deficit disorder, autism, and physical disabilities. Public schools are required by law to provide appropriate services to these students. The Special Education Program prepares teachers to teach in resource rooms, special education classrooms, and inclusive class settings. The Arkansas Department of Education requires teachers to hold a teaching license in general education before adding the special education license.
The Special Education Program also prepares teachers for teaching students identified as gifted and talented. The Arkansas Department of Eductiaon requires teachers to hold a teaching license in general education before adding the special education license.
