Professional Biography:

Dr. Carleton Holt brings an extensive background of leadership in the field of education to the University of Arkansas. He has served as a band director, coach, and school administrator in the public schools in Iowa and South Dakota for over thirty years. Dr. Holt's doctoral dissertation was entitled Factors Affecting the Outcomes of School Bond Elections in South Dakota. Dr. Holt has had articles on this subject published by the Educational Research Quarterly and School Business Affairs. In addition, he is the author of a textbook for educational leaders entitled School Bond Success: A Strategy for Building America's Schools, second edition, available from the Scarecrow Publishing Company. In 1999, Dr. Holt received the first annual Alumni Leadership Award from the School of Education at the University of South Dakota in recognition of outstanding leadership in his profession and his contribution to higher education.

Academic Interests and Accomplishments:

 

Dr. Holt’s research agenda is centered on the successful marketing of school bond issues and millages to overcome the national problem of aging school facilities. In addition to this leadership challenge, his research also focuses on learning preferences and school health programs to identify factors that may support improved student academic performance in K-12 schools. His refereed acceptance for 23 national presentations by the American Association of School Administrators, Conference-Within-A-Conference for Educational Leadership Professors, AERA, Education Law Association, International Conference For Educational Planning, and National Council of Professors of Educational Administration at their conferences and conventions in Arizona, California, Florida, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, Minnesota, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, and Washington, D.C., has supported his professional development.

Dr. Holt’s presentation and paper publication in Spetses, Greece shared ideas with the international educational community. It provided a new appreciation and understanding of the similarities and challenges facing all educators worldwide. His refereed poster presentation in Atlanta, Georgia for the National School Boards Association’s Annual Technology Conference demonstrated the quality and significance of EDLE technology instruction in our College of Education and Health Professions.

Dr. Holt has 12 refereed article publications, two refereed book chapters, two recognized educational leadership books for successfully marketing school bond issues, and three submitted for publication research articles. This research has involved collaborations with professors from other disciplines as well as EDLE. During his tenure in Educational Leadership, Dr. Holt has obtained five grants totaling $41,170 for the development of a performance-based curriculum utilizing a portfolio and internship in the instruction and assessment of potential building, district, and curriculum supervisor level school administrators.

Dr. Holt developed and wrote the program area’s 249-page ELCC Report for submission to NCATE’s Policy Board in August 2003. The National Policy Board approved this ELCC Report for National Recognition of the Educational Program Area at the University of Arkansas in December 2003.

Personal Information:

Dr. Holt is married and has two children. He is an ex-music major, and loves Corp-style marching programs, jazz, and playing his drum set to all styles of music. He also enjoys his garden railway system, family trips and family activities.
